Could you please confirm me if this is a VAM 4B? I just looked on vamword site and it seems to be a VAM 4b but there are the litlle 2 arrows on the last pic that doesn't seem to be on any VAM variety..

Could this be a new VAM variety?

Could you also please help me to grade this coin

Sorry for my bad english but I'm italian..
Thanks

I could not be happier to meet a non-American who has found interest in Morgan VAMs.

The 1884-CC VAM-4 series is not completely researched yet - there may be revisions or a new sub-variety designated in the future. I believe yours to be 4B, based on the "E" in "AMERICA" which looks to have the die break at the top left. This is the primary feature which indicates 4B instead of 4A and I think I see it on your coin. The "arrows" you're seeing are the result of the coin being hit by the reeding of another Morgan - these were stored in bags of 1000 and contact hits from another coin are common.

Yours is a nice example. The reverse (as is common with Morgans) is especially good. The large number of marks visible on the cheek - the primary place to start when grading Morgans - are probably not as bad as they look. Digital photography tends to exaggerate these marks, and much of what we see there can probably be considered "luster breaks" (like the hair above the ear) instead of damaging marks. I'll call this one MS63, understanding that the small images don't lend themselves to really accurate grading.

Please feel free to ask me to clarify anything I've said.

Thank you for your reply.
I understood what you wrote.
I think also that my coin is a 4B also for the spiked date that is especially on the first 8.,

Just one stupid question...
Who decides if there are new VAM varieties?

Leroy Van Allen (who is the "VA" in " VAM") is still with us, still working with Morgans full time and by universal acclamation is the only man who can declare a new VAM.

The "M" is A. George Mallis, who partnered with Mr. Van Allen to do the original research which developed into the varieties named after them. He passed on in 1999.
