VAM Help/Confirmation On 1887-S Morgan

I'm pretty sure he was referring to the first left star; there should be two parallel gouges there, one shorter than the other. Your coin is a bit unclear in that area, but I can see one of the star gouges and the other at RI, and the mark under the 7 in the denticles, are quite definitive as to the attribution. With that in mind, any variance on the gouges at the star can be put down to strike or die wear. Report this Post to the Staff

aladinslamp Pillar of the Community United States 3076 Posts	Posted 07/07/2013 01:31 am Its been a long time, as I have been sitting on this VAM for a loooong time do to this same fact......the "gouge" by it self is not truely a designation of a VAM the VAM 101 rules.......this coin was vammed a while ago.......do to the gouges........but I have been out of the ball park for a year now.. just getting bcak in........Still....the second gouge is known... not sure wht the disignation is....... even if its a valide.........O tommarrow is my time off what a horrible week.
