Chinese-Coins?-Any-Info-Appreciated-:

I was wondering if anyone knew about these coins? I found them in an attic when I moved into my house. They appear to be chinese in origin? Unsure of dates or even if they are real or replicas.

Any info would be most appreciated, (if they are worth anything, history, how to tell if they are fake, etc)

Thank you guys so much!

Hello and welcome.

Alas, I must spoil this welcome by telling you that it's almost certain all the coins are not genuine. These early Chinese coins are very commonly counterfeited in China, and have been for several decades now.

The quickest way to test them is with a magnet. Any old magnet will do. If it sticks, the coins are 100% not genuine. Cheap steel copies have been coming out of China for quite a while now. Note that the opposite is not necessarily true: if it does not stick to a magnet, then further testing is needed.

The next test is weight. The Chinese dollar (coins #1 to #4 and #6) is supposed to weigh much the same as an American silver dollar, about 27 grams. The tael (coins #5, #7 and #8) is a Chinese unit of weight that weighs even more, over thirty grams. Copies like this tend to weigh around 20 to 22 grams. Again, being super-lightweight means they definitely are not genuine, but if they weigh right, then further tests are needed.

As for the taels: very few 1 tael coins were actually struck in China; most of the designs for tael coins are actually pattern coins, struck by mints in Europe and were never issued for circulation. Coin #5 claims to be an extremely rare pattern tael from Kwangtung Province. Coins 7 and 8 claim to be from Hupeh Province; this type was actually struck for circulation, but they are still rather scarce coins. It is extremely improbable that such coins wuld be just sitting around, mixed up with a bunch of other more common coins.

I think you are 100% correct. I got really excited when I seen these but they stuck like glue to my magnet. Guess i'll have to keep trying.

My best find came from an older gentleman who wanted to sell his coin collection. It was an 1800's Charleston SC slave auction token. He told me I could pick any one coin out of his collection and get it for $10. He was having a tough time parting with his coins. Wish I had had someone knowledgeable like you with me that day Sap. I'll continue my amatures quest of collecting and keep in touch with you guys. I am glad I found this fourm

Happy 4th!
