You know, if they replaced all presidents with Liberty, no one could say they're playing favorites, although many are right in that GW should remain until ATB ends. Actual people should only appear on commems, period.

I think circulating two types in a denomination in a single year (one with prez and one with Liberty) is a bad idea, and a total cop out. Too many circulation issues as it is, and now they want to add more?

I'm all for this bill.

And that the ATB program should stick around to its conclusion one way or another, whether GW's head is on the obverse or not. Personally I am a fan of the GW obverse but I'd have no problem with a liberty-themed replacement -- even mid-stream of the ATB program. Provided that the ATB reverses are seen out to the end.

I'm already trying to envision what a 3" version in the 5-oz pucks would look like... hmmmm....

I'm not really sure if I'm for this bill or not when I think about it.

I feel slighted that our Government is attempting to take advantage of us coin collectors by intentionally issuing additional designs that they know people will hoard in order to make money. I suppose that the "debt reduction" part of this plan is just to make it sound more appealing..

It just kinda feels like they are going in the direction of the USPS.. countless numbers of different issues per year to make money. But I guess this program will only be two more issues a year so it's not too bad.

It is it wont do anything to reduce it. The extra money made can make the budget for the year look a little better but thats really it

But.... If they wanted to change the obverse .. and keep all the ATB reverse's to completion .. I would have no problem with that change ...
I would be okay with this, however, I would prefer to see GW until completion. They can change the obverse for Round 2.

Quote:
The obverse changes they made in 99 ruined it. GW's head is flat. I assume they did this to decrease die pressure.
Low relief extends die life and allows for increased speed, both are necessary for the higher mintage numbers of modern coins.

The S mint surprise was bad enough...
Oh, how I agree.

The plan sounds like a confusing mess. Also, the low relief coins of recent years are a disappointment.

Hey,

If they are even so much as "bothering" to "talk" about redesigning the half, do you think that the government may try to push the half back into circulation? I sort of think there is some hope for halves now, if there is talks of a new design coming out, just as I have high hopes for the redesigned $2 bill, coming out in the Meaningful Access redesign, starting in the early 2020s. Do you suppose that the $1 bill will be phased out as well, and maybe the penny since the penny and nickel are not included in this redesign, so that there will be space in cash registers for both halves and dollar coins in the coin slots, and a slot in the bill section for $2 bills? Do you think vendors and self checkout companies will upgrade for circulating halves and $2 bills when the self checkout companies inevitably will have to retool their machines to give dollar coins (and possibly $2 bills) as change?

I think it will be easy for the self checkouts to be reprogrammed to dispense $2 bills in change in the place of the $1 bills, but making the machines dispense halves and dollar coins could be a bit more tricky and costly. But at least, for the dollar coin, it has to be done, so, why not do it for the half as well, and rake in a little more profit?

OldSkoolMadSkilz ...a lot of the seigniorage that came from the State Quarter program is slowly trickling back into the economy
.
Slowly? It was a massive, prolonged dump.
Lowest-mintage 2008 variety = Oklahoma-D 194,600,000
Highest-mintage 2009 variety = District of Columbia-D 88,800,000 (beginning of the year)
Lowest-mintage 2009 variety = Mariana Islands-P 35,200,000 (end of the year)
All 2010 design-mintmark varieties were in the mid 30-million range.
2012, the first six design-mintmark varieties (El Yunque, Chaco, Acadia) were in the 20-million range.

If business strike mintages are any indication, massive quantities of State Quarters were dumped at least through mid-2012, and average 100+ million variety mintages finally returned only in 2013 (and each 2013 variety is still lower than the Oklahoma-D)

Agreed that replacing the $1 note series with a volume-production $2 note series makes total sense, and would make room for the $1 coin.
