I just picked this up today. Has a couple little scratches and isn't the nicest in color, but what you think. Seller said I personally tested this coin and have weighed it and got the weight between 191 and 192 grains on a digital scale. No reaction to magnets, tested by 3. Let me know what you think. Thanks Rob

I believe the coin is a counterfeit / copy.

My reasoning;

1) The weight is less than that of a genuine US silver half dollar. 191 grains is about 12.38 grams, a US silver half-dollar weights 12.5 grams. (I realize that the piece shown is worn and therefore would be expected to be underweight - by how much is difficult to say. The weight, however, is not my primary issue with this piece.)

2) The lettering on both sides of the coins appears to be a different style than that on genuine examples - - " it appears thinner than on an original coin.

3) The lettering is also further from the rim than on a genuine coin. Your "coin" appears to be missing the internal ring that encircles the coin just inside the rim.

4) The tree on the reverse, from bottom to top, does not appear to match that found on an original coin.

5) The tips of the horns on the skull on the obverse do not match.

There are other small variations, but those above are enough for me to believe this to be a counterfeit.

The font is off (in my opinion). UNITED STATES should be serif, this coin is sans-serif.

Sorry I got to this thread late ... but pleased to read that the CCF experts provided a correct diagnosis and that you have received a refund.

I applaud your interest in the classic US silver commemorative series ... just be mindful that they are copies and or counterfeits of every coin in the series. A bit of research when purchasing raw examples is always your best defense.
