I decided to show my face inside the local bank after a couple months' hiatus. The teller says she is glad I came by and asked if I was still looking for interesting money. I know she keeps all the Eisenhower dollars she finds, but she hooks me up with some random stuff when it comes through. So she takes out this $1.00 nickel wrapped roll. She said a customer came in with it and said her mother died and this was found in a kitchen drawer while cleaning out the house. It has the reverse from a Jefferson nickel showing on both ends, but the nickels look pretty old (to be clear, I have no interest in opening the roll). I have been looking around the internet but can't find anything about it. Anyone ever seen something like this? It's white paper with grey lettering "$1 NICKELS" on the ends. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Edited by skyshark124 07/07/2013 02:24 am

Never heard or seen a 1$ roll of nickels before but I have seen a 25 cent penny wrapper before. John1

From coinHELP: "Remember this, no matter what the coins are housed in, paper or plastic, a roll of coins will always contain the same amount of coins, if they are of the same denomination. There's exceptions to this rule since $1 nickel wrappers still exist and contain 20 coins instead of 40, but these are not readily available today."
So, looks like they may be gone in abit. I'd say keeper!

Thanks for the replies. I was confused when I first saw it, since I have only ever seen the normal $2.00 rolls for nickels. The teller asked me to let her know what I found inside, but I told her I had no plans to open it. I asked my mother if she recognized it (she was born in the 1940s) and she said she has never seen anything like this. No one I know or ask seems to know anything about it. The plot thickens...

Please forgive me if this comes out sounding accusatory; it's not, because I don't have the knowledge in the roll-collecting niche to pass judgment. I'm unqualified. But, it seems to me like keeping the roll intact would only be to induce speculation on the part of bidders in a resale, and that doesn't seem copacetic to me. What am I missing?

Font looks very 70s. Like the idea of the smaller roll. When I roll my change, it seems like I can always fill many quarter rolls as well as cents, but end up searching the entire house to fill a nickel roll. I don't even bother rolling dimes.

Doesn't sound accusatory at all, since people do this on ebay all the time with the intent of drumming up interest with some random semi-key date coin showing on one end. I guess the difference here is, I have no intention of ever selling this roll.

I'd be soooo conflicted in your shoes. On one hand it's a neat thing you never see and I would want to keep it intact and on the other hand I would be DYING to find out what's inside, like it would chew away at me constantly. once opened(I know wanting to know would win with me, lol) i'd then be consumed by regret for opening it, I'm happy you found it and not me.

It does gnaw at me, but the fact I have never ever seen one like this makes me want to keep it just like it is.

Until one of us finds another, this roll may be unique. But guess what's inside the roll? Jefferson nickels. Maybe a Buffalo.

Is there a way of opening the roll without wreaking it?

I remember being at a Seaside Boardwalk Arcade years ago that gave out 1/2 rolls of both nickels ($1.00) and quarters ($5.00) in shotgun rolled wrappers... just so not remember what state it was, but do know it was on the East Coast.
