Could someone please explain how VAMs are defined? Is it a result of lapping or re-cutting dies or completely different die marriages(different reverses used). Can VAMs vary by die state? I don't need complete tutorial, just a few sentences if someone has the time to put an end to my curiosities...or you can link me to a site that could answer my ?s.

Thanks in advance for any and all input.

VAM's can be defined by die state, although they are usually numerically related. For instance, a VAM-23 with an additional clash or die break worthy of designation would be VAM-23A. Of course, this is only in cases where die marriages are known - some Morgans were struck in numbers such that hundreds of dies were required for the issue, and that makes researching die marriages pretty difficult.

There are undoubtedly many VAM's from the same die marriage, with differing number designations. Those are corrected as they are caught.
