At the coin show this morning, my son was looking for a cheap filler 1864 for his indian head book since he couldn't afford the 1864-L. I honestly didn't even look at the coin there, I just saw "$6" and said there you go son, and he bought it, as it was about the only one there he could afford for that year. Now that we've got it home though and I looked at it, I honestly think it's an 1864-L with the pointed bust...however, I need to confirm that so my son knows where to put it in his folder. Pictures below (the coin is a little beat up, lol):

It's my opinion that you still need to go out and spend $6 on the one without the "L," because this one fills the "L" hole. For the future: Another telltale, good especially on worn coins, is that the rounded, non-L bust extends further out past the tip of the 1. You'll see what I'm saying when you find a rounded-bust example.

Yep, have to say you snagged one there. Now you have to find a non L to match.

Thanks guys. My son is going to be super excited when I tell him, as the 'L' version was out of his price range for the foreseeable future. He kept asking me every 5 minutes after I posted this "Have they responded? Is it the L?", lol. He's only 6 so this is a big deal to him. :)

I humbly concur that this is an L variety. I believe that the area where the L was appears raised, smudged to a slightly different color than most of the area in the ribbon. Have your son compare that area under a glass with the same area on a later date, better condition Indian cent; also, to examine the pointed versus rounded bust area. Once he trains his eye to spot these, he can be a cherry picker! Happy hunting!

You've got the L variety. In addition to the pointed bust, I can see a lump where the L is supposed to be.
