Picked up this beautiful Liberty nickel the other day. When I got home to add it it my database, I remembered that I had a roll of low grade Liberty nickels. Sure enough, I found the same date.

I think comparing them is very instructive and there is also a story wrapped up in there: those coins both left the same mint in the same year, possibly from the same die. They had very different lives, but now they are side by side again.

Most of my 20th Century type set is AU or better, so strangely, I may be on the lookout for low grade specimens that match the AU ones.

Very neat idea!
A more challenging thing to do would find coins with interesting die cracks or other markers and try to find lower grade ones with similar things.

Steal away! I might also try to collect all of the major grades for a certain year (G, VG, F, VF, EF, AU, MS)...sort of a grading guide. That could keep things interesting for quite a while.

Many collectors of a particular series put together a slabbed or raw grade set as a reference aside from the date/mint set they are completing.

It helps them to identify over graded coins and they become a more educated collector.

chetzier,
I use this same example to teach my sister about our coins:
Average circulated vs. EX or AU.
I am hanging on to low grade coins to dramatically demonstrate why the coins in the albums are 'special.'
That 1911 nickel would fit nicely into my set!

I envy you.

Gyrene7483, I can definitely see the value in that.

OldSkoolMadSkilz, "Before and After" is exactly how I have it labeled in the computer! I almost used that title for this thread but was afraid it might give the wrong impression!

matthewvincent, I hope your sister appreciates the demonstration!
