I received this impaired coin in a roll of pennies I bought off ebay. My excitement at finding a mint-marked Indian quickly turned to suspicion upon examination of the coin. At first, I just assumed someone had tried to clean the verdigris off the obverse: But that spot is directly behind the mint-mark on the reverse: My guess is that the "s" was cut out of a Lincoln Penny and soldered onto the IHC. The heated portion of the obverse reacted with what ever surface the coin was resting on. I can't focus as tightly as I'd like on the mint mark itself, but you tell that something is going on: Edited by pristine2 07/09/2013 5:39 pm

I would agree with you it looks fishy to me.

I'd bet the marks below and to the right of the 'S' is related to how they 'made' the S.

Was this on the end of the roll so the S was showing?

Yeah, It doesn't look right style wise. I know there are different positions and styles.

Definitely something wrong going on here. I'd say from your points of discussion pristine2 that is definitely a forged mintmark. Either way, too much stuff going on here to pacify me.

Definitely.... The seller wanted you to find that so you'd buy more from him/her. I would take it to a coin shop see what the guys there can tell you about it.

It's a fabricated fake. Given the "zits" (strongest in the date and "CENT") and the general rough, porousness on the devices of the obverse (look at the chunk taken out of the R in AMERICA; that's not grease), there is little chance of it being anything else.

There's something funky about this one. I suspect the corrosion is meant to distract from design problems. The legends on the observe, especially "STATES" look weird to me too.

best test for a fabricated coin is taking its weight. any coin shop or jeweler should be able to do that for you. Please let us know what is turns out to be!

In my opinion it has been altered, not fabricated from scratch. I weighed the coin on my digital jewelers scale and it is 3.09 grammes, which is nearly spot on for an IHC.

As, stated by the others, looks 'fake' to me also... the 'S' is too big and, what is that 'blob' on the bottom of the S..?
