I have an opportunity to buy a 1843-O Liberty $2.50 graded AU50. Any thoughts on value. I checked ebay and the prices are kind of all over the place. Thanks

Large date or Small date? Also, what grading company?

Wholesale for PCGS/NGC Large Dates pieces in AU50 is $1425.

Wholesale for PCGS/NGC Small Dates pieces in AU50 is $330.

@BH1964 I am not sure if it is a big or small date and not sure of the grader. I saw it and made a note on the year and grade. I will check it out tomorrow.

The coin is a small date and graded by NTC. He wanted 330.00 for it

Did the holder look like one of the ones from the NTC website?

I bought gold coins back in 2000 that were in NTC holders. They were all legit. I only payed gold value at the time. So grading didn't matter to me. I sold one coin for almost what I bought all 4 for.

I don't trust an NTC slab any farther than I could throw the forum. They are exemplary of what's called a "third-world slabber."

True, in general. NTC is both optimistic on grades and may overlook problems like cleaning so you have to assume an NTC-slabbed coin is likely overgraded and afflicted with some kind of defect. Nevertheless, it is possible to find decent coins in NTC holders selling at attractive prices. Buyer definitely beware, but a careful collector can score nice pieces.

My only NTC coin is an 1835 Half Dime graded XF-45, cleaned. I'd grade it XF details, with a light cleaning and very attractive toning that gives it a lot of appeal. I'm very comfortable with the $35 I paid.
