PMD for sure. Probably caught in a fire.

Lamination failure.
Remember, this was the first year for brass, rather then bronze pennies.

Probale causes:
Most probably a latent lamination weakness to begin with.
then
1. full lamination failure initiated by:
a) fire. Staining suggests heat. Partial area subject to greatest heat, or
b) impact. Clamping on impact could be involved in this case.

I was leaning towards a lamination issue before PMD. Never thought of heat though. Does make sense. When I first took a look at it I thought possible lamination problem and that is was in water and the corrosiion lifted the lamination up.

But since the fire/heat suggestion, I am leaning towards that now.

Good coin to put in my weird coin book.

I agree with John1 that it looks like glue.

Superglue can be removed with acetone.

Laminations usually run in straight lines. This one looks like PSD to me.

Once I have time I will use acetone. Once I got my microscope out (recently moved so still unpacking) I think it is PMD.

The line one the obv starting from the bottom goes north. It then goes over the top and onto the rim and over to the rev. If it was a laminatio problem, the line would not be on the edge of the coin also right?
