This fellow is offering a mint-sewn bag of 200 Kennedy halves at the "bargain" price of $250:

Of course you buy precisely the same bag of coins directly from the mint for $139.95 + $4.95 shipping:

There is a sucker born every minute. And in this day and age their are a large percentage of people who are too lazy to search the internet, know how to use the internet, or are blind to the fact and believe that ebay offers the best deal for any item for sale.

Imagine risking "payback" for a $100 take like that. Seems like a pretty risky business strategy. Some people don't react well to being ripped off, especially if it makes them look stupid.

I haven't been looking at coins on ebay for long, but it seems like it's hard to find prices which can even compete with my local coin shop (even the legitimate listings). I'm a newbie, but has anyone else found this to be the case?

I've had some great deals on ebay, and some terrible ones. My main advice is that if the photos aren't crisp, or in any way leave you struggling to see the coin ... FLEE. In too many cases the obfuscation is deliberate, and you'll end up with a problem coin.

Guys, give it a break. The guy simply posted an item and asked a certain amount for it. There are no misleading statements. The pictures are of the actual item being sold. The ONLY thing you could say about this is he is asking too much for it. And so? So what if he is? Businesses ask high prices for things day in and day out. People will choose to buy from them or they wont. There is NOTHING wrong there. Certainly nothing worthy of karma comments or obfuscation charges.

I couldn't disagree more. Posting a $250 buy-it-now price for an item readily available from the mint for $139.95 requires the ethical integrity of a scorpion. It means he is willing and eager to profit from the lack of information in the marketplace, laying in wait to snare the novice and the careless. Sure, it isn't illegal, and some people even admire that kind of serpentine business practice. But criticism should not only be expected, it is wholly warranted. It erodes confidence in numismatics and unfairly tarnishes the overwhelming majority of coin dealers who operate in an ethical and above-board manner.
