I think it's a 6. And I'll go so far as to suggest S-85, but not with 100% confidence, with pics this dark.

Better, but now I'm not sure the fraction fits for S-85...

It is S-85. The obv is definitely the one used for S-84, 85, 86 and 87. On the rev the first leaf on the right points straight down at the right base of the A. This is KEY. flipping through the later 94's, the 95's and the 96 caps that leaf is only like that on 95 S-79, and 96 S-85 and 86. The positioning of LIBERTY on the obverse immediately eliminates S-79. S-85 and 86 have the same obv so we neever to tell the reverse apart. Look at the middle leaf in the cluster below the D in UNITED. On S-85 the point is below the center of the upright and on S-86 it is right of the center of the D. This is S-85.

Thanks, Conder; was hoping you'd chime in. I guess it was just the pic or the corrosion that made the 1 in 100 look a little low.

Thanks Conder and p.! I really need to get a copy of Penny Whimsey. I just cannot, for the life of me, use online pictures for attribution.

Take my advice, even if you get a copy of PW, try to lay your hands on a copy of the Dan Holmes I sale catalog. The problem with using online images, especially for a beginner is that in most cases you can only see one large image at a time. Attributing also takes practice and experience. With practice you start learning certain areas which FOR YOU allow you to separate out groups of varieties (see a certain thing, well that eliminated this this and this etc.) The variety diagnostic descriptions in PW are nice, but when you are dealing with very low grade large cents the diagnostics they list are often not visible. So you have to learn to work with what IS visible. And having a book or a good catalog lets you flip through the varities quickly noting which ones match

Nice coin - I like the pileus motif. bit far out of my price range though.
Pretty good coin too - no rim dings or scrapes despite being buried.
