I decided to put a pic of an ugly large cent to see if the coin that westcoin talked about bidding on was prettier than this one! Bad pics with glare but you get the general idea of what it looks like. Photobucket does not seem to be working right now so both pics of coins are on the large cent expert post westcoin did. After looking at both pics which coin is uglier and why? Jerry

My comment to WestCoin was that there were better coins for the price, but let me be clear - there are no ugly 179X coppers. They are all unique and need to be held in hand to be appreciated. I hug mine quite often.

Wow - I have never actually handled an 18th-century US coin!
What stories it could tell...

well I do kind of like mine as well even though its hard to see much detail in it. The ugly comment was just for fun.

I have to agree with cipster, there are no ugly 179X coppers! My 1798 Large cent is not particularly rare or valuable, but it's just so darn cool to have a coin from that far back!

It has a nice patina, but appears to have a hard cleaning somewhere along the way. And it looks like some kind of copper mite chewed on the reverse. I have a small spoon from the 1760's which has similar problems due to being dropped in the garbage disposal. I straightened it back out the best I could and it's still functional.

Nope the one I posted was way uglier Only due to the nasty dip/clean job making it brightened up like a search light! The little holes punched into your example sure don't help but at least the coin has retained it's dark natural copper color. For those that don't know what coin Jerryc39 is referring to or missed my thread it's here: https://goccf.com/t/153500#153500

Here are the pictures of the one I let slip away (thankfully). Just incase ebay dumps them in the future.
