Yes, I looked at all of the RPM and this (what I believe) is the large d/small d or RPM south. What I do not understand is that NGC certifies all 1916 d RPMs as FS-501 Also, in the cherry picker's guide does it have anything pertaining to value? Or a rarity factor?

Quote: What I do not understand is that NGC certifies all 1916 d RPMs as FS-501 That's not out of character for the two largest TPG's. Sometimes, they just do stuff their own way regardless of how the numismatic community sees it. Of 625 auction results presented by Heritage for 1916-D Quarters, only 8 were attributed D/D. That's a hint as to rarity. As regards value, all I can say is that the PCGS example I referenced above hammered at a 50% premium over "normal" price in grade.

Judging from the current PCGS pop with only 1 at Vg-8 and 0 lower, I may have a lowball on my hands. Do you think that this is worth sending in? (perhaps not now, but in the future or when barber varieties become very popular?)
Even if the answer to above is no, I may want to send it in just so it is not sold/traded/etc. as a G4 1916-d barber

I would absolutely consider putting this one into an attributed slab, regardless of grade.

Alright, I believe I will take your advice and soon join PCGS and submit this coin. I believe I am having beginner's luck (this is my 2nd year of coin collecting and I have found many sweet deals.) I don't mean to brag but just to name two: a F-12 1913-S type 2 for only $75 and a 1916-d merc for $3, you may remember this coin from an earlier thread. This coin reminds me of some chit chat an educator from a coin club and I had at the summer FUN show. "There's a BIG difference between rarity and value." I believe you understand where I am coming from.

SsuperDdave, I would like to thank you for your input on this coin. I searched the web high and low for information on this coin. Finding little tid-bits here and there. I wish to one day have as much knowledge on coins as you do. Ryan

save your money, unless your intent is to have a low ball.

do it do it! It's not a normal 1916-D and needs to be seperated & identified. Have considered having ANACS since there is no membership fee?

I think ANACS is the same as NGC and recognizes all RPMs of this date as a Large/Small D.

Pro tip: I knew nothing about this variety before seeing it here for the first time. Like many coins I comment on at CCF. It's all there for you to find on the Internet, if you look hard enough.

Wow! You have me fooled, I thought that you had seen this variety before and done extensive research on it. I plan on joining PCGS and submitting this and 3 other coins at the FUN show in January. You can submit coins at the show using the voucher, correct?

I think (do not quote me) that PCGS uses a special "Show Tier" pricing for submissions at a show; I know for sure about that tier but it probably only covers coins they grade and encapsulate during the show itself. It ain't cheap. My guess would be that if you're willing to endure the normal turnaround, they'll accept voucher submissions at the show for later grading. You know you want to go to FUN, anyway. All you have to do is ask while you're there.

Quote: You know you want to go to FUN, anyway. That is very true. I really like only being an hour away from one of the best coin shows in the Southeast. I'll also ask if you can submit variety coins under the same tier with the voucher. I do realize that they will not waive their $15 attribution fee.
