Afternoon, we've a Hanover 1830 Queen Victoria coin has a printing error of "Quen" instead of "Queen"

Was this a well known error?

All replies welcome.

Please see the attached image, thank you.

Thank you for the reply mackwork, hopefully I'll be able to find some information relating to this coin & why it has the "Quen" error.

Commonly known as a Cumberland Jack.(try google)
I believe they were privately minted.

Hello and welcome.

Peter is correct; these aren't "coins". They're card game counters. As such, "errors" are more likely to occur, since quality control at the badge factory they were made at would be less stringent than at a government mint.

It isn't the only "error" on your piece. The date is wrong, for starters: Queen Victoria did not become queen until 1837. And "H.M.G.M.", which presumably stands for "Her most gracious majesty", is the incorrect title for a reigning queen. It should be either "Her most excellent majesty" or simply "Her majesty". HMGM was (and is) the title used for wives of reigning kings.

Many of the Cumberland Jacks appear to use H.M.G.M., though.

My supposition is that, when folks realised that William IIII was not long for this world, & that (since descent in Britain was per stirpes) their next monarch would be a woman, & that (since Brunswick-Luneburgh had the Salic Law) this would rid them of the odious Duke of Cumberland, the satirical medalists got their burins out. And one turned to another to say, "oi, Bert, what's the style for a queen, anyway?" It having been a hundred twenty years & more since the death of Anne, Bert of course thought immediately of poor Caroline, & answered "why, 'Er Most Gracious Majesty!" And so this sort of thing.
