My current digital camera, a Canon S1, is in for repairs under the extended warranty. I'll find out in about a week if it's repairable. If not, I'll get my money back, so I'll upgrade. (I bought it as an open box item for $190.) My best friend, an ebay Powerseller, can get me a brand new in box Canon S3 for the wholesale price of $200. (It's currently in stores for $350.) The problem is that because he's not a Canon authorized dealer, not only can't I buy an extended warranty, even the original manufacturers warranty is not valid. I checked this out with Canon. My question is: Do you think that buying a new Canon digital camera at a great price but without a warranty is a good move & I shouldn't be concerned because they're built well, or a bad move & not worth the risk? The only answer I can give is, "Are you feeling lucky today?"
Great price, immediately lost if it ever malfunctions. Your call.

Something is not right here. If it's brand new in the box, fill out the warranty card and send it in. It would seem there's something either your friend is not telling you, or you're not telling us.

Personally, I have the worst luck with electronic devices. It must be a great deal to take the risk. In such cases Murphy's law always applies to me:)

It's Grey Market, Bobby. Overseas sales only, much cheaper than in the US, and Canon has a record of the serial. That's why they won't warranty it, although Yechi7 is correct about Canon's exclusivity clause with dealers, too. You can buy grey market cameras at reputable dealers like Adorama and 17th Street Photo, and they will be somewhat cheaper but not warranted. Of course, this one could have "fallen off the truck...."

Bobby, some manufacturers are VERY PROTECTIVE of their products and retailers and require proof of purchase from an authorized retailer for any warranty work. Oakley(high end eyewear company) was one of the first to implement a policy like this due to the fact that so many Oakleys(and fake Oakleys) are sold surreptitiously at flea markets and on ebay.

Well, I stand corrected and apologize then. I personally however have never had to supply a receipt to activate a manufacturer's warranty. I send in the card or fill it out on line and it's done.
