Hey guys this is just a little idea I came up with while messing around with coins and stuff earlier. Basically it's a coin in a 2x2 that I had posted in the grading section. Inside the other side of the flip(its plastic) is a sheet that has a QR code that can be scanned with a smart phone and directed to the page where the coin was graded. There is also a shortened link on the side as well. Below the photo is a youtube video demonstration.
Nice however a few problems. To start with remember that the mojority of coin collectors and even dealers are rather on the elderly side. I'm sure if you ask most of them about a QR code, they'ld say HUH? A what? And just how many older people have a smart phone? Then too, not sure how many, but most of the older people I know wouldn't even know what a Utube, youtube, is. I go to a restaurant several times a week with a large group of elderly people. I keep away from conversations like computers, ebay, smart phones, etc. Better conversations are based on phones with cords. Only one other has a cell phone. Ever see those adds on TV about keeping cell phones simple for elderly people? Now picture explaining a QR code. If any elderly people try texting, they usually would need a key board full sized. Go to a coin show and look around. See how many people there could or would like a newer grading system. Maybe in the future, but nowadays it is sort of what happened with the Edsel Auto.
That's an excellent idea. I think there are some good ways to expand on it too, with links to different types of pages. In a sense, it's a lot like being able to put an unlimited amount of information on a 2x2 flip. Particularly for odd coins that were very difficult to identify or had interesting backstories, a link could be very helpful. Thanks!
Just Carl, had to laugh about your post. My wife and I are in the same boat. Just old dogs trying to learn new tricks. Neat idea Icollectyoubuy. Does it come with written instructions?
PLEASE call it something else, there are already a couple services that have used CCGS.
As for tamper resistant hot seal the flip with a sealing bar that has a distinctive design or label on it. Make sure there are good pictures of the coin on the page the QR code takes you to, preferably with comments on, or close up images of, any distinctive marks on the coin. (Note the photo in the OP is NOT good enough.)
Quote: Awesome!! How do we divvy up fees?
How are you going to divvy up reimbursement for grading errors or coins that turn out to be fake? Or is this going to be one of those services that disclaims any responsibility for their opinions?
That's pretty cool icollectyoubuy! Though I don't know how the QR code is generated, I'm sure I could find out.
For me however, the idea appeals for if I ever get round to creating a website to host photos of my collection. I could create a link to the relevant page to accompany the coin and then, if ever I sold it, the future buyers could find out any information I have via the QR link.
May I use the idea? Or have you plans to patent it?!
Of course, this assumes I'll actually get around to it all! So for now I guess I'll continue with traditional paper coin ticket older collectors (like me) here in the UK still persist in using!
I call first dibs on the certification of the coins that we grade. We can call it the CCAC (Coin Community Acceptance Corp) and put a red bean on each one! Our fees just doubled!
