with ebay demanding tracking in order to protect the seller many are charging higher rates for shipping to offset claims for non-delivery. factor in a bubble mailer, a trip to the post office etc and a couple of bucks over the cost of a stamp can disappear pretty fast. at the end of the day how much do you think you can make of a $5.99 cent ebay sale? others may be trying to guarantee a minimum final price, and I will admit some pad their shipping to the extreme in case they have to refund an item (low refund on the item while still profiting from the shipping), I dont think either is the case here. in the end I couldn't care less what people list as shipping rates, I take the opening bid + shipping and factor that into my top buying price.

I bid the same way. I know what I'm willing to pay. If the shipping and opening bid exceeds that then no bid. Some people do use shipping charges as a cash cow or safety factor.

Three Rosie dimes in a 5 x 7 padded envelope with tracking should ship for less than $2.25. I would ship them in a plain envelope w/no tracking in flips for .50C or the price of a single stamp. Sold about 40 Mercurys recently and all went out in a regular envelope and my shipping charge was .60 cents and I would ship up to 3 in an envelope that way. ebay does not require tracking but if its lost its your loss. Never used tracking for raw coins valued less that $5. A lot of ebay sellers think you need tracking and padding and boxes, etc. so they charge accordingly. Some sellers do charge higher than normal shipping. I look at the coin then the feedback and then the shipping costs. That shipping charge does seem excessive. Just my thoughts edgman

Most people that use ebay so seldom mention all the other charges when they make purchases. Sort of like those charges aren't really part of the purchase.

edgman, I have been trying to send coins through the mail recently, and would like to learn more about your method of sending coins. It would make selling and trading coins much cheaper and easier for me. Thanks!

Also ebay doesn't charge fees on shipping, only on the final value price, plus the listing fees. That's why you'll see items for $1 with $49.99 shipping. Rick

There is a lot of bad information being posted in this thread. Highly suggest reading ebay's actual policies and do not rely on what people above have stated.

OK Wade, I stand corrected. Been a while since I paid much attention but I do know that with paypal fees it cost me about 15% of the total. But there are few places that can bring as much money on any given item as ebay. Rick

ebay actually give you a discount on shipping. You can ship up to 3 oz in a thick envelope (padded) for $1.69 with delivery confirmation. I use a padded poly envelope with coins wrapped in a little bubble wrap to make it thick enough for USPS. Then factor in a printed label and tape to secure the label and my cost is about $2.50. You guys using regular first class with no tracking/confirmation will eventually get burned. The little bit you save will cost you when either your crappy envelope gets ripped open by the PO or a buyer running a scam claims it was never received. Most of us that have been selling on the web a long time have learned their lessons long ago.

Absolutely, get delivery conformation at minimum. You will lose if the buyer claims he never received the package without it.
