Hi
I just registered so I'm a newbie that knows nothing. I need a little help in locating a place in Manhattan where I can take a U.S. Fifty Cents note so that someone can look at it and give me some information on exactly what it is and an approximate value.

I've done some initial research on e-bay and know only that it is a circulated, 1875 Allison/Spinner 50 Cents fractional currency note with a Red Seal and Blue Right. Don't know what issue it is. Only saw Third, Fourth and Fifth Issue examples and don't know how to tell what mine is. Would, of course, like to know its value.

I don't have a photo nor the ability to take a detailed enough photo to post at this time. Thought it easier to just pop into a shop and talk with someone to learn about it and figure out where to go from there.

First off,

I'm doing a little research on Spencer Clark fractional notes and Jimjumper took the time to write a sensational reply to my inquiry to point me in the right direction:

"The bible for Fractional Currency is Rob Kravitz book "A Collectors Guide to Postage and Fractional Currency". It was just released in an updated second edition. There is also a group of collectors that specialize in fractional named the Fractional Currency Collectors Board and they put out a newsletter plus hold an annual meeting at the Memphis International Paper Money Show. They are an excellent source of fractional info. Good Luck!"

If you could take a picture of the note and ask some of the knowledgeable people on this site what they think, I'm sure they would be able to help you out.

If you have it in a protector, cant you take it down to stationary/copy store and get it scanned on a disk or something cheaply?

Anyway, I'd grab the Kravitz book first, if you're in NYC. I'm sure the big public library system there has a copy of it. Good luck.

no KK, the note is from 1875. I am not that old

I pieced together a type-set of fractional currency.

I finally got enough time to do a little checking on your note. Summer is my busy season for work. Using the Kravitz book already referenced, and assuming that your note looks in appearance like the example also already posted by Fuzzy317, you have a Fifth Issue, 50c note, cataloged as Friedberg #1381. However, you mentioned that it has Allison/Spinner signatures. FR1381 notes have a Series 1875 date but the signatures are actually Allison and New. New had a squiggly signature similar to Spinner so at a quick glance it could have been identified as Spinner. For info, William Crawford is the portrait on the note. He was a Georgia State Representative, then State Senator. He then served as Secretary of War from 1815-1816 and was Secretary of the Treasury from 1816-1825. There were 13,160,000 50c Fifth Issue notes printed in 2 types. The 1381 has blue fibers in the right end in an attempt to discourage its counterfeiting. The 1380 is pink paper with silk ends. Values range from $25 in VG to $225 in Gem Uncirculated. Hope the info helps!
