After watching some youtube videos on melting zinc cents, I thought I would melt some. Below is my Zincoln-Art with about 50 post 1982 Cents in each piece..

Not knowing if there is still a ban on melting Lincoln Cents, I sent a message, along with these photos, to the U.S.Mints facebook page 2 weeks back and have not received any reply..

I explained that many of these were corroded and not pocket friendly, and the sole purpose was to make zinc-art, and not resell them for a profit.

I used a Peace Silver Dollar in a bezel to show the size of the zinc-art pieces.

Thought I would post a video I found on youtube about the serious copper cent hoarders profiled on abc news.

The ban is still in place. However, there is an exemption in the ban to allow people to melt coins for artistic purposes. The relevant part of the law in question states:

Quote:
The prohibition contained in ยง 82.1 against the treatment of 5-cent coins and one-cent coins shall not apply to the treatment of these coins for educational, amusement, novelty, jewelry, and similar purposes as long as the volumes treated and the nature of the treatment makes it clear that such treatment is not intended as a means by which to profit solely from the value of the metal content of the coins.

In other words, you can turn your zincolns into scrap zinc in the name of "art", and as long as you sell them for "art prices" rather than "scrap zinc prices", you're fine.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

In the right community, the art prices would be significantly higher.

Thanks all for the replies.

I waited about 2 weeks prior to posting this, and when I didn't receive a reply from the mint, I thought the most they could do was to ask I take it down.

Thanks SAP, I was not aware one could melt coins for artistic purposes.

I tried the pre 1982 copper cents and had problems reaching a high enough melting point to pour the melted copper into a 5 gallon pail of water (this is how the zinc pour was done).
