I got this Morgan dollar and it has a big scratch in the shape of a t or x on it. Some guy said its only worth melt value because of this. That seems unrealistic that a couple scratches could automatically do that. Here's a picture:

He is right. Cleaned, damaged, graffiti obverse. Worth melt.

I think Gene is correct. The PMD behind the cap coupled with what appears to be a polished coin drops this to melt value.

How do I melt it? I have some other silver I want to melt.

You shouldn't melt it. If you sell it on ebay or a coin dealer as is, they will know it is 90 persent silver and would be happy to buy it from you melt. But if you melt it, it will take time and effort and you will be left with a big lump of silver witch know one other than you would be able to tell what metal and purety it is. Moral of the story is don't melt it

You would also be destroying a piece of history that has been through and survived 114 years if you melted it.

Then I'll just keep it. Maybe a person carved the t in there a long time ago because it was their first initial.
