Recently dropped off some coins to get graded at ANACS. Haven't picked them up but saw on the website that my 1861 Seated half dime was designated an FS-301 variety? It was unfortunately graded MS-60 details/cleaned. Would love any help on this one it is driving me crazy. Thanks

From CoinFacts it appears you have: 1861 "1/0" Die Variety (1861/0 Overdate FS-301)
Could still be quite valuable unless it's harshly cleaned.

I will post pic when I pick it up beginning of the week. That is pretty cool. I remember looking at it and not noticing the overdate or any cleaning, but I guess every day as a coin collector is a leaning one.

That's a neat overdate for which there's quite a bit of demand. Rather nice of ANACS to do the attribution for you, don't you think? Should carry a substantial premium even in Detail condition, although the designation will hurt. As an example, AU specimens trade at 3x-4x grade value.

I think they felt sorry for me because a few of my coins had been dinged with the dreaded cleaned/details. You are supposed to have to specify and pay extra for the service. It was very nice of them. They were very nice when I dropped off the coins as well. The best part about this is I bought this coin from one of my favorite shops up in Longmont. They have a bid wall with various coins and/or gold/silver up for bid every other week. I won this coin thinking it was close to uncirculated for $55.00.

Pretty sweet variety! I have not sent mine in yet, but you have the "grade" advantage. Strange that they were not more descriptive by putting 1861/0 on the top line. FS-301 may be specific enough for some, but others...

I didn't pay for the attribution because I didn't know what I had, so I guess you can't ask for much more than what they did.

Fayette1800 - Do you have Valentine's Seated half dime reference book? It's a touch dated, but yet still a great book for Half Dime enthusiasts. If you need a copy I know where there are a few copies on sale now, let me know. P.S. These are either soft or hardbound copies from Quarterman publications under $50.00 you won't find an original copy less than $150.00 or more, unless you luck into one!

I see you don't accept e-mail you could PM me and I'd send you a link to a couple of places that are pretty decent deals. The book usually sells for $50.00. I know of at least one paperback edition under $40.00 and some HB copies around that price too. Google "United States Half Dimes Valentine" you will see it on most book sites like Amazon and ebay. I will send my recomended dealer on it at a good price if you prefer. He has a copy new - shrink wrapped for $30.00 in stock right now.
