I could use some help with the C1 and C1a varieties of 1882 H large cents. Charlton lists the C1 obverse as having a single serif N in Canada and C1a as having a double serif N...I have four pics here:
1. C1 with Single Serif N

2. C1 with Double Serif N? Is this correct or is this something else?

3. C1a with Double Serif N = normal

4. C1a with Single Serif N? Please correct me if it is something else.

Any help would be appreciated.....thanks

Don't use the serifs of the N. You can have the four different combinations of obverses and serifed Ns.

While all are fairly easy to find, the ones a bit scarcer are:

- Obv 1 Full serif & D/C in Regina
- Obv 1a Single serif

Then you also have the Obv 2/1a's (3 different dies for the 2/1a's).

Thanks, I'm not sure what to look for when looking for 2/1a's. Is there a variety book that would really break down all the differences? Charlton shows only C1, C1a, C1a/C1, C2, C2/C1, and C2/C1 DD.

I know of no C2/C1a dies, only C2/C1 dies.

C1 dies have single serif N's, but so do a few C1a's.
