You have a 5 Rials coin from Iran.

Not sure what the date is but these coins were made from 1943-1976.

Hi graceoutcast!

Any way of finding out what the date is on it?
If so what should I look for?

It has a lion with a sword on the back and sun behind him.

Cheers!

On the coin with the side you took a picture of there should be 4 Arabic characters.

Here is a link that translates them.

Let me know what the numbers are. It should be something between 1322-1357

GO's link is fine for Arabic numerals, but Iranian coins have Persian numerals, which are slightly different - particularly the 4, 5 and 6. Also, there were a few years when a different calendar was used, so the year may appear as "2537" or some similar number.

If you're having trouble, post a clearer picture of the same side you posted above, and we'll see if we can read it.

lol!ok then sap looking at it again I'm pretty sure it might be 1252 or 1353,but looks alot more like 1252!

I cant get a clearer picture atm due to no money to buy a better camera

Any ideas if its got any value?Im paranoid of letting things go now as I'm quite a novice collector and things have slipped past before!

Thanks guys!

1357 is equivalent to 1978, the last year of issue of these coins, and is slightly scarcer than other years of the same type.

Now I know how to figure out the years on some of the foreign coins I have. I wasn't worried about it but haven't researched it. Once again here's the answer to another numismatic question. frenchcoin - thanks for the question. graceoutcast and Sap - thanks for the answers.
