Hello, first post here.

I have a 1939 S Wheat cent on which the 2nd 9 looks different than other 1939 S coins that I have. Is this an error?

Damaged, most likely from a coin rolling (wrapping) machine.

PMD for me too as you can kind of see the outline of the original 9's shape.

The distorted device matches the rim. Coin wrapper/counter/dispenser damage.
