Anybody have any details on the die break and if it's known/commands a premium?

Actually a Retained Cud! Way better than a simple die break, defintely a premium, not a lot, but yes value to Cud collectors for sure! I do not find this Cud in Thurman/Margolis Cud book. Very cool! They do show a 1911-D with a reverse Cud, but no 1912-D.

Cool, finally somebody chips in with some info for me... does the '11-D look like this or is it different? I doubt a badly damaged reverse die would carry over from year to year as I'd imagine employees would check the reverse die when they changed the obverse out, but ya never know!

Any idea where/how I can get this properly recognized? It's pretty cool and I wouldn't mind spending a few bucks to have a "discovery" coin to my name, ha.

I doubt this is a discovery coin, die craks can help to identify varieties, but there is not usually much premium assigned to them unless they are spectacular and in a very collected series, ie; Scarface Morgan dollar, or the crack goes through the whole coin, Cuds on the other hand are collected in there own right. There was a book published on the more popular ones as I mentioned above. Nothing new has really been put out in years that I am aware of, as to value added on your piece? I'd imagine a couple of dollars maybe, most Cud collectors are looking for pretty high grade examples.

I am not aware the any TPG will put any special variety other than Retained Cud reverse on the holder (maybe). And you would pay extra for that, not worth doing IMO. You might want to check with the Barber Collectors Society as to a designated ID number for this piece. http://www.barbercoins.org
