I was just wondering how many collectors hunt through common world coins looking for double dies. I am sure that these are cataloged or were reported someplace, but the information has been lost. So for me - these are "NEW" discoveries. I love these because they are inexpensive, yet the die making error is super.

Here is an example:

In this case, the die was hubbed at least three times and the doubling is very clear. The coin is silver, but I am still new using a digital camera and this is the best color I can get.

I would definatly keep one if I saw it but I've never seen one in probably 10,000 or so coins I've gone thru.

I've found a fair number of defective planchets die rotations and broadstruck coins in my world coins, a few of which I posted on the forum. I haven't seen any doubling though. The Indian mints seem particularly negligent in their quality control, but I've also found defective coins from Chile, Great Britain, Mexico and Spain.

The funny thing is that I eyeball thousands of US coins every year and have yet to find a similar error.

US mint standards are high and they do not like releasing errors. Mexico does not seem to care.

As a hint - when hunting junk boxes always look at 1940s 5 Rappen from Switzerland and 1940s and 50s 10 Centavos from Columbia - those series have large numbers of doubled dies - some very widely spaced. Most sell in the 5 for a buck range. Dealers never pick out the double hubbed coins. Also the 1907 Panama 1/2 Centisimo has at least a half dozen different doubled die varieties. In fact the single hubbed die is scarcer than the doubled (if you count all the doubled dies together). Keep looking - you will definitely find them.
