Last week I bought a collection of Ecu and 5 Francs of the Kings of France. 9 coins from Louis XV to Charles X all different and all "counterfeit". The lot sold for $25 each.

Here is the best of the group.

I said I bought them all as "counterfeit".

It is real.

I believe the real problem was context. The lot was purchased all at once from one source and 8 are in fact counterfeit with wrong methods, wrong metal or wrong weight. How did a good coin get mixed up with such bad company?

If you don't want it anymore, Bob, we'll take it off your hands for you.

I was just trying to make the point that in all cases, what is offered for sale may not be what it actually is. Sometimes a coin labeled counterfeit is in fact REAL.

Whenever I buy collections of counterfeits there are invariably some REAL coins mixed in. Usually they are real coins that have been cancelled in years past by bankers who were fooled by odd looking coins. It is like buying a real collection and finding a couple counterfeits. Basically, these are honest mistakes and they just teach us to ALWAYS keep our eyes open.
