Hi, I would value opinions please about this $20 note that I got at the bank today. Is it common for a $20 to not have obvious orange wavy lines in the area below the serial number? Have to say that I haven't paid attention to this before, but when comparing the two notes side-by-side, it really stood out. Is it a keeper? Thanks, M PS Sorry about the blur in the second image, sensitive macro ...

I agree it dosen't look normal. Anyway I don't know a lot about banknotes but perhaps a new plate? or a trial? or probably just the ink used was a little brighter than normal? Actually it could be a security feature more likely did you take both pictures in the same light and from the same angle?

Hi again, I just noticed Curleys had a query about a similar $20 note earlier tonight in the Variety and Error Coins, Bank Notes, Paper Money thread. Thanks Oh My Florin for your thoughts, but now it seems very odd to me that there are two of them on the same day. Could they possibly be forgeries? But then, if they are forgeries, why would someone bother to have the serial numbers 11 years apart? Or maybe a collector has cashed them in and Curleys and I live in the same area? I wonder also why the coat of arms watermark is so much more visible in both of our notes. I've just warmed up my new scanner, so hopefully this image showing the weird note and a normal note is clearer. Thanks,M

Hi all, newbie here, first post. Regarding your watermark question, I think it displays relevant to how it was reproduced. A photo will show differently to a scan - and one scan will again show difterently to another. It all depends on the "dpi" settings of the scanner. Have a look at http://www.australianbanknotes.net/...tes/r420.htm and the other pages showing $20 polymers. You will see the watermark is different in almost every image.

G'day Awildeheart, both your and Curley's note are quite interesting. It's almost like there was too much ink, but it only seems to impact that small section? Time for some head scratching!

Hi Badpenny, thanks for that link, it does show a wide variety doesn't it? Some do look like this note too, but I've never noticed one like it before. Does anyone know whether these are recognised inking varieties, like how the $5 are recognised? Re the watermark, in real life the watermark is very obvious and I have to say I don't recall noticing it on a $20 before.

So, is it as a keeper, or and I spend it? Any and all opinions welcome. Thanks, M

If it was me, I'd probably hang onto it until I found out more as it is unusual. There is so much more ink in that section in comparison to the other, whereas the backgrounds of the remainder of the notes appear the same.
If Goatieman pops in he would probably have some ideas, but I haven't seen him here recently.

Okee dokee Unicorn, good advice to hang on until proven otherwise. Goatieman, Goatieman, where fore art thou?
