So I bought a PCGS OGH walker a few months ago from a dealer at a local show that I have dealt with quite a bit. He has top notch silver coinage (95% raw) at decent prices(starts around greysheet ask) and will haggle reasonably. A few days later I cracked the slab and put it in my album. The slab cracked awfully easily so I looked up the cert # on a whim. Ended up being bogus. Next show I showed the dealer and he was genuinely surprised and gave me $100 off greysheet bid on any coin I wanted as a "make up". I was cool with that as I liked the coin anyway at the price I got so I wasn't really "that po-ed" that it came in a bogus slab. But it has made me be more diligent about verifying certs from now on and since. I now look up any potential buy right away before I offer. Has other advantages so I thought I'd share! Was looking at a nice PCGS Walker on ebay but the pics were more than a bit fuzzy. Looked up the cert and it had sold on Heritage a couple years ago. Their pics ( which are great IMO ) revealed that there was significant toning on the obv and a little on the rev as well. The fuzzy pics did a remarkably good job of concealing it all as it turns out! Since this seller is pretty high volume I decided to ask him a question to guage his honesty. I said his pics were too fuzzy and could he post better ones or tell me if there is any toning at all on the coin since it is so hard to see the surface/detail. He responded that he didn't have time to take more pics of it but that there is "no toning at all - to speak of". RIGHT! Now on my "never buy from" list! qualitycollectiblecoins FYI Another ebay seller had a coin I was interested in but listed at $350 BIN-only when the retail on it is $250 and that is way inflated - as usual. I looked it up on a whim anyway. Ended up he bought it at Heritage a month earlier for $135. OK, he got a darn solid bargain on it at auction, but asking for 2.5 X what he paid and way over retail? That's what is so nuts about some majorly greedy eBayers! Wastes your time to even look at their stuff.

Yeah some people are very crazy on their pricing. They'll learn when their stuff doesn't sell.... or not.

How did you determine the walker in the OGH was bogus? There would be no pictures and there are a fair number of errors in the database. I'm not aware of any fake OGH slabs other than the first generation fakes.

The cert # did not show up as a valid coin in their database. Maybe it was a genuine and their database is in error - I somehow doubt that though!
It fell apart as two pieces with barely a blow - thus made me suspicious it was glued "back together" instead of sealed. I've never had a slab break apart that way before. Combined with no hit in their db I figured it was bogus. The dealer agreed, he had not looked it up. Said he bought it at a show the week before from a stranger.

well to the point of pricing above what was paid isn't that why we love auctions so much for the deals? if its worth 2.5 times more then why not make your profit.

I had a whole batch of pcgs coins not show up after I had them returned to me and they had to fix it... seems like that could easily happen if someone didn't check online when they had their submission returned...

Happened to me recently on a PCGS graded coin I purchased from someone I trust. I contacted PCGS and they had be send them the coin to review. They determined it was a database error and added it back in so it now shows up on their cert verification page. It wasn't an OGH but it wasn't a recent slab either

Someone putting in the work to make a profit, possibly to earn a living, is "nuts" and "majorly greedy"?

Must be a very nice dealer as the basic rules in the buying coins game IS, once you crack a slab or remove a coin from a dealers 2x2 there is NO return policy. And, on top of that you got a $100 credit and kept the coin? Hmmmmmmm
