I've a friend in N. S. W. who sent me a small sampling of the gold he has dug down there in his neck of the woods. In addition to the gold, he sent me three coins from "down under". Thought I'd post scans of them.
This is a first for me - first coins from Australia. I like 'em. I take it that they are a dollar, a 50 cents piece, and a penny. Probably nothing spectacular, but I think they're pretty cool.

Yes Ralph they are normal circulating coins (except the penny which is a pre-decimal issue),
Now you will have to collect more to keep them company. We have many commemoratives as well to tantalise your taste buds.

bm1947 - pre-decimal?
To date, I've collected nothing but U.S. coins, so I have no knowledge of any coinage not minted here.
No matter the value on them, I think it was thoughtful of my friend to send them - and unexpected, so that makes it even better.
In appreciation for the gold and coins, I sent him some U.S. halves - one each of: Seated Liberty, Barber, Walking Liberty, Franklin, and Kennedy (all circulated, of course). I'm assuming you folks down that way don't see all that many of our coins, so I thought it would give him a nice variety.

Hi Ralph....from 1910 to 1966 we used the old English system of Pounds, Shillings and Pence (£ s d) but on the 14th February, 1966 we went decimal ( $ c).

Pre-decimal coins included halfpenny, penny, threepence, sixpence, shilling and Florin ( 2 Shillings). One other coin was produced in 1937 & 1938 only and this was the Crown.

Have a look at this link: http://www.cruzis-coins.com/index.html

I am collecting US State Quarters and Presidential dollars at the moment but I agree with you that the average OZZIE would not have seen many US coins.

Enjoy your new coins.
Rest in Peace

Ralph:

I am now collecting Australian Fifty Cent pieces and Twenty Cent Pieces by date, and placing them in a Dansco Album.

Thanks to several great friends in Australia I am well on my way to completing those collections.
Rest in Peace

"The burley's been good this week..."

Wow, I'm learninga lot of Australian words. I leared what "chuffed" means, and now I have to ask about "burely?"

Concoction of many things tossed in the water to attract whatever it is that you're trying to catch, fish, sharks etc. It also comes ready made. Depending on what you're angling for, it might contain chopped up fish, chicken innards, dog food, blood, bread etc etc....

or the odd Aussie coin
Gary, see if you can find a small book, probably have to try the net, called "Let Stalk Strine" by Afferbeck Lauder, pub' 1965. A small paper back about quarter of an inch thick. Library of Congress Catalogue No.65-23906, not expensive . It's a dictionary of Aussie slang that you would enjoy. Advise me if you can't find one.

Ralph, your penny was minted in Perth: the clue is the dot after the word "PENNY". See separate thread "Australia's TWO Mints" for more details about Perth.
Your 50-cent is the standard, or non-commemorative, type. Lately, most years seem to commemorate something.
Your dollar is commemorative, called the "Dancing Man". The image was derived from a well known newsreel made in 1945, depicting a young man dancing in the street in Sydney, celebrating the end of the Second World War.
I hope that this helps you to enjoy your coins even more.

Peter - I do appreciate the information. These 3 are my first Australian coins, so they'll probably keep a special place - no matter how many more I acquire.
