So I started collecting coins about a year ago and was lucky enough to purchase a box of coins from a deceased estate that held a significant number of valuable coins. problem is some of them are most valuable because there condition is fantastic for such rare coins. so with that in mind I am wanting to grade them so if the need comes I can sell them for what they are worth and not based on how good my pictures are of them. problem is I have never sent coins to be graded and I am massively nervous about sending such valuable coin of to PCGSS with having done it before. with this in mind I was going to get Stirling Currency Fremantle to do it for me and pay their fee to do so. So can anyone offer an opinion on this negative/positive or otherwise provide advice?

Personally from PCGS I have heard that they are very consistent in general BUT that they can sometimes be a bit clueless in grading foreign coins ,that there is a multitude of things which if they spot on the coin will give it a details grade and if they make a mistake it will become very expensive very fast. Otherwise just check their website for these conditions (e.g. environmental damage) and look closely at your coins under a magnifier for any if you can't find any of them then good luck with sending them in. By the way just to gawk at them regardless

One can't be clueless about grading foreign coins - you can either know how to grade every coin, or you don't know how to grade any coin. What you've heard is just a petty excuse used by dealers to justify to their clients why their coins don't grade (or grade lower) with PCGS.

If you post pictures myself and other forum members can tell you whether they are worth getting graded and if they will grade, just remember PCGS won't grade Choice/GEM coins if they have a severe edge knock or rim damage for example. I use a dealer to get some coins graded at PCGS and I've never had an issue with coins going missing or anything like that. It is cheaper doing it yourself but sending them through a dealer works for me.
I still get grading wrong but I think I've pretty much figured out how PCGS grade Australian coins with the exception of 1911-36 Australian silver, I still don't get some of their grading on those, the biggest thing is PCGS doesn't consider strike until MS67 so that's probably why.

Need a bright focused light with low ambient lighting, uniform light won't reveal surface condition - they could be covered in cleaning hairlines for all we know.

yeh they havnt and I cant take any better pics whilst they are in the sealed mylar flaps I have stored them in since I got them. a assure you that the rupees are drenched in mint lustre, they almost sparkle under mag with a slight dustness from toning. the 1/2 sov has hints of lustre round details and the other not so much but they seem to be key dates. I figure that I will get more if they are graded as people wouldn't believe they are genuine with out it. the box I got them out of had been in storage for many years and they have been inert and stored away from sunlight in old envelopes during that time

wwwww I know PCGS is a good grading service and frankly I believe they are the best of any But what I was saying is that their specialty and I know that they try hard to grade foreign coins to the best of their ability but sometimes they lack some knowledge on how Australian's grade their coins and what parts to give weighting to. If you catch my drift. I wasn't trash talking them.
Otherwise nice coins especially the half sovereign which is British? from the die number? But just check up on the PCGS website to see if they will grade the one mohur? (second coin) due to the stain on it? otherwise looking good.

Eric of Drake Sterling Numismatics is very good. He'll give you his opinion of how a coin may grade first before he sends it for you. This is good because PCGS will still charge you the fee if for a coin and grade it genuine/cleaned etc. If you're not sure just send a couple of coins to start with. And don't be in a hurry current lead times for PCGS are through the roof, you might wait 6 months to get the coin back unless you pay for express.

thanks purple penny but unfortunately he seems to be over east so I cant use him. as for time to get coins back, that doesn't worry me so much so long as I get them back. I am a bit worried about them getting lost in mail. has this happened to anyone b4? and how would you go with a claim?

so the coins have now arrived at pcgs, I ended up sending 9 coins at a final cost of $670. I was told to expect a long wait. how long do you think it will be before I learn the grades on regular service?
