Im no coin expert, but if this guy is asking you to buy the coins from him, then hes going to resell them as a set,it seems a bit odd.
But as I say I'm no coin expert.

And I just want to add did the guy call you out of the blue?

Also sorry for your loss

I do not know what the seller is referring to, but the US Mint does not have a "new liberty coin" in a $2.50 or $20 denomination. The last coins minted in those denominations were gold coins that were last minted in the late 1920s/early 1930s.

The current gold bullion investment coins minted by the US Mint are known as gold Eagles. The denominations are $5(1/10oz), $10(1/4oz), $25(1/2oz) and $50(1oz). A four coin proof(collector quality) set can be purchased for less than $1500 directly from the US Mint. http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...ory_rn=10118

If this is the "liberty coins" the seller is referring to-http://www.libertydollar.org/#- run away as quickly as possible as it is a complete scam

BTW, welcome to the forum rookie! Hope you stay a while and pick up some knowledge

Hi, Rookie...welcome to the forum. In the world of coin collecting the old addage "if it seems too good to be true, it probably isn't true" fits well. There could always be exceptions, however.

Is there any chance that you could take a picture of one or more of your dad's coins and post them. That would help the experts here pin down what coins/series you're talking about, and give you an estimate of actual value.

Best wishes.

20 grand sounds horridly high. Pictures will help if you can post them but I'm afraid I smell something fishy at the moment.

Welcome to the forum, rookie. In MS64 (as graded by one of the three or four respected third-party graders and nobody else, you could acquire such a set of the more common dates for maybe $1000 per coin. $1300 is a reasonable price for some dates of the $2.50 Liberty in MS64, but excessive for the more common ones. That is, again, in a slab graded by PCGS, NGC, ANACS and possibly ICG. No others.

Could you tell us what the dates are on the existing coins, what company graded them, and the same for the coin he's trying to sell you? This really does not smell all that well to me, especially knowing that there's very little demand for a "set" like you're describing.
