Nice coins, Phocas coins have always interested me, I consider him the Caligula of the Byzantine period.

Didn't Heraculis strangle Phocas himself with his bare hands?

Seems like Emperors should have gotten hazardous duty pay back then. They never knew from which direction the axe would fall.

the byzatnines also seemed very fond of their poking rivals eyes out if they didn't kill them, in a byzantine history book I read recently I lost count of how many times someone was blinded to dampen any aspirations that they may have to rule. anyone know if this was common for others culters? check this out on wikipedia... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Politi...tine_culture

Quote: Didn't Heraculis strangle Phocas himself with his bare hands?~Ancientnoob From my recollection of Norwich's "Byzantium: The Early Centuries", Phocas was beheaded. Phocas had Maurice (who he rebelled against and overthrew) forced to watch his children being executed before he himself was beheaded.
