Thanks for all of the kind words, everyone. Here's an overview of everything in the collection. The blue Whitman books are completely full of silver (dollars through dimes). So far I have only gone through the cents and some of the dimes. My initial impression is that there are many 1964 dimes, quarters and halves and most of them look uncirculated. Undoubtedly, the father began holding on to them when it was announced that silver was to be removed from US coinage.

Here is the first item that I found rather interesting: the coin is common enough, obviously, but I have to imagine that it has been in that baggie since 1964. Perhaps the bank was giving them away to new customers? (I'd prefer that to a toaster!) Maybe they were helping to introduce the new coin to the public? Anybody have any ideas or seen anything like this before? I just loving find a coin that brought along something else from its time.

I don't know much about the old Whitman Morgan folders, but I can just picture the moment when I put them down on my desk in front of me and slowly opened that first cover. Truly stepping back through a door that has been closed for years.

Is that some sort of gold piece lying on the envelope - like maybe a quarter-eagle? Just south of "Lunch"...?

Quote: Is that some sort of gold piece lying on the envelope - like maybe a quarter-eagle? Looks like a half eagle to me. I am guessing it may be the 1901-S mentioned in the initial post. Looking forward to seeing additional pictures.

weerdsteev, yes that is a 1901-S half Eagle. It was in that white envelope with all of the other loose change that was sitting on the envelope--it seemed very out of place! I'll post a close-up of it later. solotime, there are indeed buffalos! I think Ann will probably let me keep anything that is not silver. She said she doesn't have any sentimental attachment to the coins. I think this album is very cool because her father wrote his name on it and dated it. It is about half full (mostly the later dates) and if she lets me keep it I'm going to fill the empty holes in honor of a previous collector (I have a roll of Buffalos that I purchased years ago with the intent of starting an album but never got around to it). I'll leave a note inside indicating which coins it had when I started and which ones I filled so that long after I am gone, someone else can enjoy its history.
