Yes, I've gone and done it this time. I saw a republican bronze, untouched by time, badly photographed and looking rather small. I'm not sure how its going to be, but judging by the prices of every other peice I've seen, I reckon I've done alright. However, I've put in enough money that I'm going to have to liquidate it. Well, ill have a week to gawp at it before I send it on its way - ill probably never have an opportunity to handle another one (fun side story, theres a handling collection at a place I visited yesterday which lets you handle stuff like syracuse copper, celtic electrum and medieval crowns). UJC1!BR98qFqgP!~~60_12.jpg) Any opinions? I kind of want to keep it! Should receive it in a week or so.

Where did you go for the handling?

The Ashmolean. Quite a few people came and went while I was there. The people running it were surprised I knew what I was handling (they tried to make me volunteer, but its just too far to go - Apparently, I'm the first person which has recognised the Syracuse for a syracuse). The Ash has a great display of coins - theres a lot dotted throughout the museum too. Theres a great display at the Byzantine section. EDIT: I forgot to say - they have the only known extant coin of Domitianus! Many a coin I recognised on display too. Theres a sestertius depicting the colosseum, but its pretty tucked away. DOUBLE EDIT: Tracked down the full ID. I reckon this is a smaller permutation of this, but heres a coin on sale for $750:

It really looks too good to be true ! Lets hope it isn't ..... Usually people who don't know what they are trying to sell tend to think it must be worth big bucks. Apparently this person knew it was Roman but didn't even bother to take a decent photo. Curious. If it turns out good I would advise you to sell off some 'junk' to justify keeping it. If you sell it off you may regret it someday (when you are old and grey !)

Well, the seller guaranteed original. So if its not, Ill get my dough back. But if its real, what about those other coins? Could they be more than roman tat?
Well, ill see what its like. Roman republican bronze isn't my best cup of tea, but it does look darn nice.

Are those pictures from the seller? When will you have the coin in hand? Looking forward to better pictures.
Maybe you can sell a bunch of your self-cleaned coins and keep this one.

Well, hopefully so. If anyone wants any coins around here you needonly ask. *cough*.
I did actually acquire some pretty nice coins this week alongside a Heraclean campgate I wanted (my collection of SMHA campgates is at 2, just got an SMH€ to go with em). Most of those will be sold, that should raise some funds. Got a nice double/over struck Julian.

Ben I hope that one works out well for you. Have you considered sending it off to a grading service for authentication? It might be worth the extra scratch to have it slabbed, especially if you want to resell it someday.

Fortunately, Grading is not the done thing in the world of ancient coins. wE want to hold our coins! Authenticating...maybe. But I can do that. Draw up my own certificate...hmmm...

Can you take it to the British Museum when you go? I don't know whether they would do it when you just called in, but I think (I'm not 100% sure) they put the coins in little packets with the information written on, if you send them in. I know it's not a certificate of authenticity, but it might bump up the price.

Let me know when you are ready to part with it, it would where you left it, if you should want it in the future....

It wont arrive in time for my trip to the British museum, but I could always send it in (if its real, that is).
AN, if you email me, we can do business beforehand. I wont need long. Just long enough to familiarise myself. Besides, in the course of my life (and I have quite a while to go) ill find others. I might have money to buy a nice one outright when I'm older and have a regular income.
