Bought a bunch of dirty Roman and Greek coins a few months ago. Soaked in water for weeks then olive oil for a month. Kinda forgot about them. Took a look at a few this morning. This tiny thing caught my eye. Thought it would be somewhat easily identifiable but I can't find it. I'm not adept at the LRBs though.

I looked at Warren's site ( http://esty.ancients.info/ricix/ ) and Helvetica's spreadsheets... still not sure what this is.

Do any of you recognize the reverse? Is it Victory advancing left, perhaps dragging a captive? I'm not finding similar ones with a prominent cross in the left field.

Can't quite make out the legend or mint mark. On the obverse... not much left but the remnants of a nonspecific late Roman bust.

11 x 12mm, 0.9 gm

SALVS REIPVBLICAE. Victory advancing left, but somewhat off center. Dragging a captive.

Thanks Ben. So that makes it a Valentinian III? (or Galla Placida) I don't see a cross in left field listed on Helvetica's spreadsheet.

Losing interest already. Hard to stay excited about this little flyspeck of a coin.

Hmm, looks like there are a few emperors with this reverse. Not sure why they weren't listed on Helvetica's spreadsheet. Found a few possibles on the esty site, including Theodosius, Arcadius, and Honorius.

With a little bit more soaking you might be able to reveal some of the legend. I think it's Theodosius II.

Id guess Theosodius or Arcadius. If it was Galla Placidia or Valentinian III, then you'd have a reason to be excited!

Unfortunately, these are veeery common coins. But a pretty interesting period.

Mint looks to be Nicomedia or Antioch.
