I saw a 1996 $2 die clash both sides here:

Are these readily available and how much would I expect to pay for it?

Something tells me these might be common and also available in different years.

Any thoughts

Thx

Not common because of the combination of: amount of coins struck, pressure of press, speed of press, and composition of the die.

You may find: 1996, 1997 (the most common of all) 1998 and 1999 (hard to see because the coin is "busy"). Haven't seen yet in other years but continue looking for.

You will have to find them, by hunting. Most coin dealers would not carry or sell a twoonie die clash.

And, I suggest you hurry - the Royal Canadian Mint's alloy recovery program is now in full swing to collect the older base metal twoonies...

I found the only one I have after looking at about a thousand toonies. It was probably luck, because I've checked 1500 others and haven't found another one. Happy hunting :)

Just curious about the reason for this in your opinion?

I do get a feeling in this forum that the interest in loonies and toonies is noticeably less compared to other coins. I am wondering if it has to do with them being more "recent" or just knowing that if there is something to be found it can be done through circulation.

Thx

There is no doubt about the ARP that mint has embarked on. I have also heard that loonies and toonies are being targetted. However other than the loonies and toonies that were spilled on the highway I have not seen any mention of the quantities of ARP related to loonies and toonies.

The anecdotal evidence I have from roll hunting shows that there are still significant quantities of pre 2012 loonies. In fact the percentage of just the 1996 in particular is almost 50%.

I am not sure if the mint or the recyclers have a way to discern amongst different pre Multi-ply plated loonies and toonies. Therefore for them they can separate out 2012 and 2013 laser mark from all other non laser mark. They can remove the non laser mark and replace them with laser mark ones.

However from what I understand the things have changed. Lower nickel prices compared to the cost of producing new loonies and toonies does not necessarily benefit the mint in terms of ARP. At least for now.

Would love to hear if you have some specific information regarding quantities recycled.

Observational conclusion from about 8 years of coin shows. Go to a coin show and ask the dealers if they have Twoonies in their inventory... Only a handful will have them, mostly in ICCS flips for grade (e.g., Coin Mart or Colonial Acres). You ask them about a Twoonie die clash or die chip variety, and most dealers won't have a clue what you are talking about.

I can understand why - dealers are in this business to make money. There is not much money to be made on Twoonies... most collectors who have the deeper pockets, stop their collections either by monarch or in 1967, with the end of silver coins... even our own CCF member glenzy1 is a perfect example of most Canadian coin collectors - dealers serve the market that makes them money...

The new security loonies and toonies are slightly smaller and weighs less than the older ones, I guess that's how they will arp them.
