How can you tell the difference between the two? I think I might have a high grade business strike but how can I be sure it is not a SMS?

Typically, you can't. Often the TPG's can't either. So if it is really nice and if there is the SLIGHTEST doubt, they will call it a SMS coin.

Doesn't the SMS strikes have the same characteristics as Proofs, specifically squared rims?

SMS coins were struck only once under higher pressure than regular issue coins. Not all of these SMS's were treated the same way and some dies were polished and some planchets were lightly polished. There's a large range of qualities and types to them (especially the '65). The mint set dies are swapped out frequently so almost all SMS are new die strikes while few regular issues are but these used dies were then used to strike regular issues in San Francisco.

Generally a collector can tell an SMS from a BU with uncanny accuracy but there are a few coins where it's much more problematical. The grading services do err on the side of calling these SMS even though some are known to not be. How do you prove a coin came out of a roll and even if you do then how do you prove it wasn't struck by an SMS die?

So I am out of luck if I thought I could send it into a TPG and get a high MS grade, cause they will just mark it as a SMS.

No, I didn't mean that. You're only out of luck if the coin isn't obviously regular issue because they err on the side of calling them SMS. Even an MS-69 (if one exists) wouldn't get identified as an SMS automatically.

If you can post a picture it would be helpful. Some markers are less visible than a photo can provide but we can still identify SMS with a high rate of accuracy and make a good guess on how it would grade. Only some business strike high grades have the SMS look.
