I went through my local KFC drive-thru four days ago, and ordered some chicken, and paid with halves, and the young teen working there said "These are "half" dollars?" and I said "Yep" and he said "I'll have to ask my boss if we can take these" and I said, "You should be able to. They are legal tender currency" so I hear him in the background "Hey, can we take half dollars?" and then he came back to the window, put the halves into the cash drawer, and I said, "Have you ever seen a half dollar?" and he said "No. Those things are cool!" and I said, "Are you going to keep a few?" and he said, "I might buy some off the till" and I asked him "Have you ever seen a $2 bill? and he says "Yeah, I got one in my wallet" and he opened up his wallet to show me a neatly folded $2 bill, then I asked, "Have you seen any of those golden dollar coins?" and he said "Yeah, I've seen those" then I said "Have you ever seen a Susan B. Anthony dollar?" and he said "No" and I said "You gotta kind of watch for them. They look and almost feel like quarters, but are the same size and weight as the gold coins. My aunt has gotten them as quarters before and bragged about how she made a 75 cent profit" and he said "Sounds cool" then I said, "Have you ever seen a big, old Eisenhower dollar coin, also known as an "Ike" and he said "No", and I said "Well, those things are huge" then I drove off, and I thought, well, to help educate this guy on "odd" money, I'm going to go home and get him an Ike, an SBA and throw in two JFK halves and let him keep them (I should have also given him a bicentennal Ike and half)", and anyway, I came back to the KFC, weny inside, and the kid saw me, so he hurried over to me, and I showed him the Ike and the SBA and said "These SBAs are sometimes called "Carter Quarters" because they were approved and released by the Carter Administration" and they were also called "Susan B. "Agony" coins, because they were so terrible in circulation", and I told him, "You get to keep those" so he takes off his rubber glove and we did the "fist punch thing" then, as I was driving away, I see the guy showing a young teen girl and another guy his "newly aquired items" and they were all waving to me as I drove by, saying "Thanks man!" and I stopped and said "remember with those SBAs out there, to watch your quarters carefully" and I also told him to watch for Red Seal $2 bills with the Monticello on the back of them, and he asked me "Where do you get this stuff?" and I said" At my local credit union service center. I dump hundreds of dollars worth off at Walmart where the self checkouts accept them, when I grocery shop". Then, someone else got up behind me, so I just said "Later" and they all said "Yeah, thanks again! These are awesome!"

Well, thats one small step.

Nice story! It reminds me of the time I was in a Mickie D's back in the early 90's and this older woman in front of me was trying to pay for her lunch with 5 SBA coins. The kid at the counter flat out refused to take her fake money. I leaned over and gave her a $5 bill and took them off her hands. The kid then asked me if they were real, and I explained to him the history of the coins, and that yes they are still worth a dollar each.

I have been thinning out my collection of larger denomination circulated coins, I used a couple of Ikes the other day for lottery tickets and the cashier was a young immigrant from India. His eyes lit up and he actually said "I've heard about these but never saw one before." he took four dollars out of his pocket and put them in the register and they pocketed the Ikes

Cool story, Fox. Nice of you to give those away! It certainly sounds like he appreciated your generosity.

I've recently started wearing the following design on a t-shirt when I go out walking for lunch:

Had-To-Educate-Another-Young-Teen-On-Halves,-Sbas-&-Ikes

I'm hoping it will start some conversations and I can educate some people as a result. Of course, if they want to sell me their coins as a result, well, that'll be all right too...

I send my sons to grade school with Kennedy halves and Ike dollars every time they need 50c or $1 for a fund-raiser. It's usually 5 or 10 times per year. They really enjoy using them and it's a good learning experience. I stock up with about 20 Ikes and 20 Kennedys from the bank before each school year. (I'm probably buying back the same Ikes each year). I give them Sacagawea dollars from time to time as well. I haven't introduced them to SBAs yet.
