A nice 1954 10 cent UHC ....

Would this coin originally have been in an enclosed set from 1954?

Yes, it would have.

Do you mind me asking how you acquired your collection? It's an incredible collection from what I've seen, and I don't mean to insult you, but I would have thought that someone with the caliber of coins that you have would know answers to questions like the one you posed.

I think it's fantastic to see coins like this...and I'm glad that you and others post these types of questions DEVLEC and jg86...being fairly new to the hobby it answers a lot of questions that I wouldn't have thought to ask...while getting to see great photography.

Nice find.

Take care

I bought my coins 'one at a time' at live auction.

Saw a nice coin...in this case different and chatted up as 'a cameo piece' ..no questions asked ...and no added info offered. Put your hand up at a small cost(in this case) and see what happens..

On rare occasions, I was very fortunate to ask some very serious collectors questions and they were very generous with their knowledge. Some told me exactly what they had paid previously for the same and I judged my bidding sometimes using their knowledge.

My avatar coin was a battle that I won in the end. The auctioneer asked me after "Do you know who you were bidding against"...of course I had no idea and didn't care. I was going to make him pay dearly for that cameo vicky ...and he bailed out...and left in a huff.

I sat at the back and he sat at the front "probably to intimidate the other serious collectors". He never saw me bidding and he kept turning around trying to. He probably thought the fix was on.....

Known rarities of that time probably cost me a good deal of money for that time in the 80's. The notes that I did keep show that that 54 cameo dime cost $30 + 10%. No gradings of HC or UHC in those days.....

Maybe the auctioneer said that it was from a set. Too long ago to remember and I haven't touched them for decades. I'm never in the coin shops,...so I ask 'the "honest" questions' here and do appreciate the comments and info oriented replies given..

Most of the proof-like coins of the early 1950s were from the old cardboard sets, which if stored in the wrong environment, caused the rims on the nickels to rust (1953 & 1954) and the silver coins to tone.

Some of the nicest blast white cameo coins you see in TPG holders are because they were dipped. I suspect your coin was dipped a long time ago.

I am not saying that is a bad thing... I honestly believe that some coins, especially proof-like and specimen strikes, are improved with their eye-appeal with a dip by someone who knows what they are doing....

jg86....I've also made some boo..boo's along the way,.. and you might not want to really pay double on some.

I sent what I thought(and was expertly told) was a choice specimen to ICCS and it came back "not a specimen" and graded AU55....so much for my eyes.........

I've got a lot of "also ran" coins too...but love the critiques ..BTW..
