I bought a single lot of halves (Barbers, Franklins, this one) off of ebay. Pictures were distant. This Seated Liberty Half just doesn't seem right. Fake, I'm guessing?

The rest of the coins were right on and still a decent deal

Almost looks like either a dug up or saltwater coin. I have a quarter my wife found in the ocean that looks just like that.

I'm certainly no expert on these coins, but, I'm going with fake. First, the date appears to be an 1876. Second, the periods on the reverse between the letters A.L.F in HALF don't make sense.

Whoops, typo on my title -- yes, it is definitely 1876.

I contacted them, and they were pretty accommodating about it. They were open to exchanging it, but mentioned having a PCGS certified numismatist on staff who inspected everything. Any chance this is real before I send it back to them?

No chances in my opinion. It's quite an ugly fake, too! Send her back!

Wait a minute. Have we ruled out a contemporary counterfeit, which is collectible in its own right?

What does it weigh? It could just be corroded.

I don't have a particularly accurate scale, but it read 8-10g. The coin felt a whole lot like aluminum if that's possible...
