The wife and I went to Ottawa this week, the main reason was to take the tour at the
RCM. We stayed at the Chateau Laurier just up the street so we were able to walk to the mint for our 10:00 AM reservation Monday.
When we made the reservation we had no idea that Monday was a Civic Holiday in most of Canada, including Ontario. I had no idea what the Civic Holiday celebrated, and neither did anyone else I asked. The best I could figure was it was an excuse to have a long weekend in the all-too-short summertime!
That it was a holiday meant reduced operations at the mint. They had a couple machines working, including the puncher making planchets and a couple people working in the finishing room.
The facility was a lot smaller than I envisioned. I know that all the circulation coins have been made at Winnipeg for years now but I still expected the joint to be larger.
The tour guides were pleasant and attractive (really attractive...) and the tour was quite interesting.
I was however kind of disappointed in the boutique. They had most of the current specialty coins struck at the Ottawa facility but no circulation coins. I would have loved to purchase a couple rolls of each coin type but all they had were mint sets for "normal" coins. The little gift shop at the Chateau Laurier had a nice selection of collector coins and bank notes BTW.
The whole tour took an hour or so and we had a wonderful time in Ottawa. It is truly a wonderful city and I was sad to leave. Due to the holiday celebrating nothing at all there was a street festival going on just south of Parliament Hill and there was a lot of stuff to see and do.
I wish we had taken our trip earlier in the year like we had planned, I really wished I could have seen the Currency Museum while it was still open. All in all it was still a wonderful trip!
