The wife and I went to Ottawa this week, the main reason was to take the tour at the RCM. We stayed at the Chateau Laurier just up the street so we were able to walk to the mint for our 10:00 AM reservation Monday.

When we made the reservation we had no idea that Monday was a Civic Holiday in most of Canada, including Ontario. I had no idea what the Civic Holiday celebrated, and neither did anyone else I asked. The best I could figure was it was an excuse to have a long weekend in the all-too-short summertime!

That it was a holiday meant reduced operations at the mint. They had a couple machines working, including the puncher making planchets and a couple people working in the finishing room.

The facility was a lot smaller than I envisioned. I know that all the circulation coins have been made at Winnipeg for years now but I still expected the joint to be larger.

The tour guides were pleasant and attractive (really attractive...) and the tour was quite interesting.

I was however kind of disappointed in the boutique. They had most of the current specialty coins struck at the Ottawa facility but no circulation coins. I would have loved to purchase a couple rolls of each coin type but all they had were mint sets for "normal" coins. The little gift shop at the Chateau Laurier had a nice selection of collector coins and bank notes BTW.

The whole tour took an hour or so and we had a wonderful time in Ottawa. It is truly a wonderful city and I was sad to leave. Due to the holiday celebrating nothing at all there was a street festival going on just south of Parliament Hill and there was a lot of stuff to see and do.

I wish we had taken our trip earlier in the year like we had planned, I really wished I could have seen the Currency Museum while it was still open. All in all it was still a wonderful trip!

You were expecting circulation coins: does that mean they do sell rolls of them at the Winnepeg Mint?

I was actually, I kind of figured that a mint boutique would sell any of the Mint products. I don't know if they do at Winnipeg or the store in Vancouver...

I am a bit annoyed with the mint boutique. They seem to sell only a small fraction of their NCLT releases. Not that I really like NCLT, I think they should offer anything that is currently being sold at their shops.

The boutique did have coin folders for the $20 for $20 series of NCLT - I haven't seen these offered anywhere else. I bought one for $2, but unfortunately, it was crushed in my suitcase on the way home... (since you put the coins in the folder still in their capsules, and it has room for the cardboard packaging as well, it needs to be thick and has plenty of airspace when closed)

@Petersun yes the Winnipeg Boutique has rolls of circulated coins. It doesn't really make sense to ship them to Vancouver or Ottawa boutiques and then sell at FV

I have bought mint rolls when I visited Ottawa boutique. To the best of my understanding all boutiques sell the rolls at face value + an administration cost of about 5%. This can be easily verified by calling the mint boutiques.

They do run out of them and perhaps Winnipeg is able to restock it more often than Ottawa.

To the best of my knowledge if the mint boutique does not carry an NCLT and it is still available on their website then they can place an order for you with free delivery.

This was the case with Ottawa Boutique about two months ago.
