Not 100% sure but I think it's done when there's an actual live auction somewhere else, so you place the bid on ebay. If your bid is higher than at the live auction you win.

Was it the recent Goldberg sale? Absentee bids are placed on live auctions, before the auction is scheduled to take place.

the auctions in question where all hard times tokens, the Auction I won was a group of stock certificates. thanks for the answer
