How did this come out? I tried follow the advice I received. I used a white background (did not crop it out in this photo). I'm having a hard time getting the color accurate but I think the photo is fairly clear and in focus. I change to ISO400 so the shutter speed would be faster, and I think that this made the photo clearer (I took so many of the same coin!) as opposed to ISO 100 and then the shutter speed was closer to a 0.6 seconds.

This coin has a bit of purplish/reddish toning as well, anyway to bring that out? I think the surface does not look quite right either.

This is a iPhone 5 picture for comparison. It's actually not too bad! And it was much easier to take. Of course it is not as detailed or clear when enlarged. However I posted this to show the color and surface which I think is closer to being accurate.

I think with the iPhone the surface look a bit more reflective and you can see the toning/coloring that I mentioned (for example above liberty's head). The true color is a light golden / metallic color .

How can I get the dSLR to do that?

I think I found the problem. I changed lights. I got the $10 LED lights from Ikea recommended here. I had another set of lights from Ikea from before I started this, but they were throwing off a yellowish light. Now I think the color is accurate.

Thanks again for all the advice!

i'd say the coin is a bit of an odd color for a Liberty nickel. It has some 'toning' as they say, but I'm not sure if it is artificial or not. If you look at it while holding it, the color really varies based on the angle you hold it and what light you look at it under. Maybe a little lighter color than the last picture, but it is pretty close. The first picture is too yellowish and the second (with an iPhone) is too reddish.

Compared to some I tried to take last night it's a Rembrant.
