Last night I started my silver State Quarter collection by buying 25 NGC PF69s.

I got 15 from the Cheapslab Store for $10 each, $7 shipping.

The others I got off ebay with the 1999 set of 5 costing me almost $75.

I paid this for them because the RedBook list coins in this set in MS-65 condition for $30 each. These are PF69s and no other silver State Quarters list for more than $8 each in the MS-65 grade.

Why are these 5 coins listed for so much more than the others? I know the book is just a guide and not to consider it's prices reality but these 5 are substantially more than the rest.

Correction, the RedBook list them as PF-65s, not MS-65s. Still don't see why that set is listed so high, it's the most common one on ebay.

The 1999 set is considered the key to the silver (proof) quarters.
It is the lowest montage at 804K.. At one point the 1999 silver
Proof set was $300. It has slowly been coming down.

For the years 1999 through 2004 you had to buy (from the mint) the
complete silver proof set, to get the silver quarters. Starting in 2005
the quarters were offered as a separate set. This also helps keep the
1999 silver quarters higher, because the half and dime will be lower mintage also.

So the five different 1999 silver proof quarters didn't come in a set together but in proof sets with all the denominations? That would mean you would have to buy 5 1999 proof sets to get the 5 different quarters? Or am I missing something (which is highly probable)?

No, no. All five quarters came with the proof set. But to get the quarters, you had to order the set. There wasn't an option to buy the quarters as their own set like there is now.

Oh, OK. that makes much more sense. So you get 5 quarters in the proof set. I wondered why I didn't see any of the later releases in sets and thanks to the wealth of knowledge on this forum I now know.

Many thanks to all that have patience to help out the uninformed and ignorant.
