Having just inherited several Mint Coin Sets from my brother, I am at a loss as how I should go about valuing them. I have looked on-line and am not sure if I should trust the valuations on ebay...Wondering if there is a site which will provide valuations?

I have the following Canadian Mint sets in their original clear plastic envelopes unopened from the mint:

1961- full set, single dollar
1962 -full set, single dollar
1963- full set, single dollar
1964- full set, single dollar
1965- full set, single dollar
1966 -full set, single dollar
1967 -full set, single dollar
1968-full set, single dollar
1969-full set, single dollar
1970 - full set, single dollar
1972-full set, single dollar
1973- full set, single dollar
1974- full set, single dollar
1975- full set, single dollar

I am also wondering if the individual coins would be more valuable than the set. They are all in excellent condition having been stored in coin albums since acquisition. Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated. Does anyone know if their is a coin club in the Niagara region? Thanks again.

ebay is a good gauge on current prices that people are actually paying for said items. Do a search on the Sold auctions that have ended, not the currently running auctions. As far as a price guide or if the individual coins carry more value then as a set, I'll leave that to someone more educated in Canadian sets.

Welcome Kimki1......

If you have been reading a little bit here you will quickly realize that if any of your coins have a cameo finish on them, then specialized collectors will pay a hefty premium over any prices that you see posted here ...or anywhere else.

If there are cameo coins in any of those sets,..please post them here.

Don't sell anything too quickly ....

Definitely find standard values for these sets and work from there. If not sure, then post clear pics here...

Book value about $400
What you could reasonably expect to sell them for, about $300
What a dealer is likely to offer, about $200
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

JJHFL -Thanks for the advice. Will use ebay to gain basic understanding of what the market will bear.

DEVLEC- Thanks for the invaluable advice. Will check them for Cameo finish. Will also post pics of them online. Thanks

DBM - Wow..didn't realize that dealers actually require a 50 % markup...that changes my thinking of where I will unload these coins, if I do...oddly enough I find I remember helping my brother sort his coins as a kid 50 years ago....Now, I am starting to appreciate the unique attraction of coin collecting. The circle of life....

Depends on the dealer, and the quantity of what you have. Since you're a stranger to any dealer, they'll probably get a bit more out of you than a regular customer would. Determine what you can get for them using ebay, then subtract the fees you're likely to incur (eBay, PayPal, shipping), and then go see if you can get close to that from a local dealer. Kijiji would be another place to look. There's tons of people looking to buy silver on there (the 61 - 67 are silver... the 68 - 75 aren't worth a whole lot more than face value). If you can avoid selling them on ebay, I'd suggest doing that.

Also, can you post a picture of the 1973 set (specifically the "heads" side). There is a valuable variety of quarter (the "Large Bust") that is worth looking for. We would be able to tell you if you have it.
