Hello everyone,

Got this coin I found, and realised its maybe a commemorative coin struck around the time when Queen Victoria ascended to the throne, or some sort of medal/broach that would be worn to inform others of the news I guess? I heard about a US president token/medal being used in a similar way when one of the presidents had died. So I am guessing this is what it is. Just want to confirm if its true and also any value it has, and if it was in better condition, the possible value of it. Unfortunately its not in the best condition, some of the writing is worn in places, also there is a hole drilled at the top, not sure if it was intentional after being minted, or was done long after. On the first side is a wreath above and below writing, which says, Born May 24 1819 ascended the british throne june 20 1837. The reverse side shows Queen Victoria(Im guessing, or possibly Britannia wearing a greek/roman style helmet) facing left, with the words Her gracious majesty Victoria around the outside. Which would conclude it is Victoria. I will attach photos hopefully so you can all see.

Cheap little medals like this were sold to the masses on special events like coronations, royal weddings, royal funerals, exhibitions, etc. This one is for the accession of Victoria; she became queen immediately on the death of her uncle William IV in June 1837; the formal coronation did not take place until a year later. The use of a very youthful-looking portrait with her hair tied up indicates this was indeed issued very early in her reign.

Thank you Sap, just what I thought, I had seen some official looking coins possibly made by The Royal Mint, and suspected this was definitely not the case with my medal. I am assuming when you used the word cheap, that also relates to the value of this medal :).
